Synopsis.

Inspired by the real-life love story and lived experiences of its lead performers, the film draws from the ways queer people internalise what they have been taught by society, their upbringing and by relationships, that to be seen is not something unconditionally given to us. We begin to believe that we are unlovable for who we are, and that we have to conform in order to receive what every person inherently desires – to be loved.

Set against the backdrop of 1960s-style film, Love Spell follows two women who find each other after a chance passing encounter. Unable to speak openly, they reconnect through a missed connections ad, and begin a relationship through careful, intimate, and coded letters that speak in echoes, saying the unsayable.

Carrying the weight of past relationships that have left her feeling rejected, she no longer trusts that love will find her on its own.

On the night of their first rendezvous, their stories unfold in parallel: Vivian getting ready with a quiet, tentative hope, Aubrey prepares a love potion not from hope, but from the wound of having been unchosen and now trusts only what she can brew herself.

For Aubrey, magic becomes a quiet fortress, a way to bind what she has only ever watched walk away to claim what she no longer trusts the world to offer freely.

Faced with that truth, guilt, and regret, Aubrey finally chooses surrender over sorcery, and risks being seen, and chosen, as she is.

Love Spell is about unlearning the belief that we are unworthy of love, and the ways queer people are shaped by this quiet, persistent message. It is about the vulnerability of stepping outside the norm. At its core, it asks what it means to trust that love does not have to be manufactured or earned, but can simply be received as you are.
